I've dedicated 11 years as a UX Designer at Google working on Firebase in NYC. Firebase is a BaaS platform, helping mobile app developers succeed by providing services like databases, security and everything you need to build an app. As the most tenured Firebaser, I was involved with the relaunch of the brand under Google. I've played a key role keeping our culture alive, onboarding over 30 UXers to the team. It's so rewarding having my work affect millions of people.
As the UX lead for our SQL database solution, the most requested product in Firebase history, I spearheaded the end-to-end design strategy over a multi-year journey from concept to launch at I/O’24. Partnering closely with Product Management and Engineering, I helped define a robust MVP that successfully captured Firebase’s signature "magic" and ease of use. Together, we established a foundational user experience designed to scale seamlessly for years to come.
I'm particularly proud of the novel schema card design which is less expensive than a wired node diagram. I designed everything down to the logo, and helped to pivot from Data Connect and GraphQL to SQL Connect.
As generative AI moved toward real-time dynamic interfaces, I led UX design and established the design system for Flutter’s GenUI Kit in collaboration with Product Management. Aimed at 3rd-party developers, the kit allows AI agents to construct bespoke, contextual mobile experiences on the fly. I designed the interactive Awesome Cruise Lines showcase app to demonstrate key agentic patterns, such as dynamic UI cards and multi-step booking flows . The prototype served as the primary demo across executive reviews, validating the architecture and securing buy-in for the full Flutter GenUI initiative.
As the UX lead for App Hosting, I co-designed it alongside Marissa Christy, architecting the next-generation successor to Firebase’s popular Hosting CDN product. Moving beyond traditional static web hosting, we designed an intuitive experience optimized from the ground up to support modern web frameworks. This included finalization of the first GitHub integration for Firebase, as well as an update to our top nav resource selection across our entire design system.
I’m currently driving the UX strategy to merge App Hosting with Hosting Classic and rebranding it as Cloud Run.
This product is a complex database program because it crosses 2 PAs (Firebase and Cloud). Each have their own OKRs and design language. I built a strong relationship across this divide to strategize together. The design of the query builder is an exemplary model for how to align goals to a larger product or program initiative.
Picking a database was a constant problem. My influence solved this by getting alignment on a direction for a new information architecture in which a new dashboard was added displaying valuable usage metrics before the resource picker appears.
Now we’re seeing exponential growth as this has become the de facto database solution for AI Studio users.
I am not only a product designer but a system designer too. I created many of the components for the stickersheet and wrote the specs for countless components, ranging from the color system to data visualization, email templates, hero banners, toggles, and more. Now I have inherited ownership of the design system and it has become more important than ever with vibe mocking UIs that do not hallucinate new patterns.
As the Lead Designer for Firebase Performance Monitoring, I collaborated with my partners to help mobile developers understand when and why their apps were slow and how it was impacting their users. Recognizing that performance lacks the black-and-white clarity of crash reporting, I came up with the idea to design customizable thresholds. This allowed developers to benchmark app speed across versions, devices, regions and carriers. This work involved a patented interaction for distribution charts. All of these features were validated in multiple research studies, some of which I performed myself.
As the Sessions page was added I discovered the IA was too deep by investigating the dropoff shown in Google Analytics. And so I hosted an intern tasked with a project to redesign the product so the information architecture was not as deep.
I was the lead designer for Firebase Phone Number verification, a new product and service for Android which bypasses the need to get one time verifications texted to you. The MVP of the product started with a short list of big name partners and the onboarding was in the Google Cloud Console. Now we are GA and the onboarding keeps the user within the Firebase console so there is less churn.
As the UX Lead for Firebase Personalization, I was tasked with designing a friendly, accessible interface for Firebase’s very first AI-driven feature. Our goal was to empower developers to deliver tailored user experiences instantly, removing the overhead of traditional A/B testing without requiring ML expertise. Launching at Google I/O ’21 alongside the deprecation of Firebase Predictions, the primary UX hurdle was user trust. I designed clear mental models and explainable AI paradigms that gave developers the confidence to hand the steering wheel over to our machine learning algorithms. It was especially rewarding to be granted my second patent with Google for this AI Personalization project.
I have a particular passion for data visualization which stems from my engineering background. My work spans across PAs working on the Cloud Data Vis spec, the public Material spec, and the Firebase spec. My work has been published in Fast Company with the famous googler Manuel Lima, and he has been awarded a utility patent for an interactive display of distribution charts. This work involved creating a beautiful palette that is accessible.
I created this toolkit for our eng and PM partners to use in Antigravity and AI Studio. The goal is to enable them to create prototypes that use our design system. It has also been helpful for UX Designers on our team to use now as we are reinventing our whole process. I created a skill for design guidance by scraping everything from the Firebase design spec that we have written over the years. This work-in-progress is a facsimile of all the components we have in production, and it is much faster than vibe-mocking in prod.
To help our team make data-driven decisions, I built Firelytics. It's a Chrome extension that shows a sidebar of Google Analytics metrics for what you just clicked on beside it our console. This is much easier to understand who is clicking on what compared to using the standard GA dashboard that is divorced from the Firebase UI.
Firelytics goes above and beyond Google Analytics since it provides a heatmap over the UI, and a visual for what events are not tagged, as well as a path to easily start tracking those events.
